The VCS Season Opens on September 20

The Valley Concert Society is excited to open its season with a concert by Vancouver’s award-winning choral ensemble musica intima. They will take the stage at the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium on Friday, September 20, at 7:30 p.m.

The group has prepared a program entitled the new canon. This will be an opportunity to hear the creative aesthetic and the exquisite musical quality that has made the group so beloved and has earned them such a loyal following.

This performance will be followed by a visit from the Butter Quartet, four string musicians based in the Netherlands. Playing on historical instruments, they will bring a program that highlights the effusive music of Felix Mendelssohn.

The dark days of January will be brightened with the appearance of virtuoso violinist Stefan Jackiw along with his wife the clarinetist Yoonah Kim, cellist Arnold Choi, and pianist Henry Kramer. Arnold is the principal cello with the Calgary Philharmonic, while the others are based in the eastern USA. They have uncovered a wonderful work by the obscure Walter Rabl who composed in the style of Johannes Brahms.

In February pianist Jarred Dunn will present a recital of music by Schubert, Schumann, and two Polish composers. He won first prize in a Chopin competition in Lithuania and has a strong connection to the music and musicians of Poland. Dunn is a highly regarded music pedagogue and will serve as the clinician for our annual master class.

We will have the great privilege in March of hearing a young violinist who is making quite a splash in the European music scene. Swedish-Norwegian Johan Dalene will be accompanied by Sahun Sam Hong in a program that concludes with a sonata by Norwegian Edvard Grieg.

The season will come to a delightfully entertaining close on April 11 with a long-awaited return performance by the talented but sometimes zany and definitely humorous Quartetto Gelato.

Now is the time to put these six dates into your calendar and to secure your seat with a season subscription. The cost of $140 or $130 for seniors works out to less than $25 a concert, much less than you would pay almost anywhere else for concerts of this quality. Students can enjoy a special rate of $60 for the season.
