Quartetto Gelato

The Valley Concert Society will end its outstanding 2024-25 season on a lighthearted note as it welcomes Quartetto Gelato to the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium on Friday, April 11, at 7:30 p.m.

Able to blend their superb musicianship with a love of humour, the foursome will present a program sure to delight and entertain.

They come with an unusual combination of instruments. Matti Pulkki is a brilliant accordionist of Finnish descent. Violinist Konstantin (Tino) Popovic grew up in Belgrade in what was then known as Yugoslavia.  The newest member of the quartet is the Polish-born cellist Dobrochna Zubek.

And then there is Colin Maier. A native of Calgary, he plays the oboe. He goes on to add clarinet, English horn, violin, acoustic/electric bass, piano, saxophone, flute, guitar, and musical saw. Where he had time to learn all that is hard to imagine, and what we will hear next Friday is anyone’s guess.

The program has something for every taste. It opens with the Overture to the Magic Flute and ends with Klezmer Explosion. In between, we hear pieces by Edith Piaf and J. S. Bach, Astor Piazzolla and Cab Calloway.

Tickets for this special program are available online at www.valleyconcertsociety.com at $32 for adults/seniors and $20 for students. Call 604-289-3377 for more information.
