The Valley Concert Society is holding a masterclass for four outstanding young local
musicians with pianist Charles Richard-Hamelin as clinician on Saturday, February 22, at
Peace Lutheran Church, 2029 Ware St., Abbotsford.
The society is committed to enriching the musical culture of our city in as many ways as
we are able. Besides bringing great musical performances to the valley, the board saw the
opportunity of bringing music teachers and students into collaborative contact with the
national and international professionals that the society brings to town.
This will be the fifth such masterclass in the history of the society, which has made a
point of alternating piano and string classes year after year.
A masterclass is a public music lesson. The student brings a well-prepared work to the
class, and together the clinician and the student work on correcting and polishing aspects
of the performance. It is a marvelous opportunity, most of all for the participating
students, but nearly as much for their teachers, for other observing students and for the
On the coming Saturday, four different students who study with three different teachers
will work for 30 minutes each on the following musical selections:
• Grieg Nocturne, Op. 59, No. 4
• Liszt Liebestraum No. 3, S.541/3
• Beethoven Six Variations on a Swiss Folk Song, WoO 64
• Rachmaninov Prelude in D major, Op. 23, No. 4
Doors will open to the public at 9:00 a.m. The sessions will begin at 9:30 and go for 30
minutes each. There will be a 20 minute break at 10:30 after which the final two sessions
resume with the masterclass ending at 11:50 a.m.
I invite all who are interested in observing one of Canada’s finest pianists work with our
amazing local musicians to attend. Thanks to the generous sponsorship of Columbia
Cabinets, we are able to keep the cost of attending extremely affordable. Hans Kruger is
committed to supporting the musical education of local young people.
Tickets to the masterclass are $10 for both adults and students. There is a discounted rate
