A World Premiere

posted in: News

Axiom Brass will produce the fanfare that opens the 2022/23 season for The Valley Concert Society at the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium on Friday, September 30, at 7:30 p.m.

Adding to the excitement is the fact that we have a world premiere performance to look forward to on Friday. The quintet will give the first ever performance of Miracles of the Human Condition by Lillian Yee.

Here is what Axiom Brass had to say about the piece: “Lillian Yee wrote a beautiful, meaningful, and stylish addition to the brass quintet repertoire and we cannot wait for our first performance of this stunning composition later this month in British Columbia!

Yee’s three-movement work is at the centre of the music after the intermission, sandwiched between two works by Astor Piazzolla, both of which were transcribed for the quintet by trumpeter Dorival Puccini, Jr.

The first half of the program is entirely Latin American music. After a study by the Brazilian pianist and conductor Cacilda Borges and an intermezzo from the Mexican Manuel Ponce, the musicians will perform a work with their own name Axiom as its title, one they commissioned from the Brazilian Liduino Pitombeira. Pieces by the great Argentinian Astor Piazzolla frame the music before intermission.

We are once again happy to present a pre-concert talk with members of the quintet in the foyer at 6:50 p.m. Intermission coffee will be available.

Tickets to this exciting season opener are available online at www.valleyconcertsociety.com . Adults, including seniors, pay $32, and students pay $20. For more information, call 604-289-3377.

I look forward to seeing you at the concert.
