A Revered Pedagogue

posted in: News

“A revered pedagogue,” or put more simply, an admired teacher. That is the description given to Jarred Dunn by Tonebase Piano, an online music teaching website.

I have shared with you some things about Jarred Dunn, the pianist, and about the music he will perform on Friday this week in the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. There is another side to him—Jarred Dunn, the scholar and teacher—that we will experience the next day.

On Saturday, February 22, Jarred will be at Peace Lutheran Church at the corner of Ware and Marshall. From 10:00 -11:30 a.m. he will hold a workshop for music teachers entitled Healthy Practice, Performance Preparation, and Perspective for Teachers. Beginning at 1:00 p.m. he will serve as clinician at a masterclass in which four piano students will play prepared pieces, and he will provide them with input and guidance. There will be four thirty-minute sessions ending at 3:15 p.m.

This is an example of the Valley Concert Society’s mission to serve the community in cooperation with music teachers and students. The workshop is a presentation of the Abbotsford, Mission, and Chilliwack branches of the BC Registered Music Teachers’ Association. The masterclass is a presentation of the Valley Concert Society with key support from Columbia Cabinets.

Jarred Dunn is an ideal musician for this. He is well known to BC music teachers from past contacts and is receiving an enthusiastic welcome back. He has degrees in both music and education from the U of Toronto. He has presented lectures, workshops, and masterclasses worldwide at places like the Juilliard School, Royal College of Music (London), and Vilnius New School of Music (Lithuania).

Dunn has published articles for a number of music publications including one on Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, former cellist in the Auschwitz Women’s Orchestra, for which he did research at the former site of Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Jarred has received awards for his scholastic and pedagogical achievements. He is an Examiner for the Royal Conservatory of Music.

Both the workshop and masterclass are open to the public. The cost to attend either one is $20 or to attend both is $30. Tickets can be paid at the door or purchased online at www.valleyconcertsociety.com . Doors will open thirty minutes before each session begins.
