The Valley Concert Society looks forward to opening its season on Friday, October 16, at 7:30 p.m. as it welcomes Vancouver’s outstanding Pacific Baroque Orchestra to the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium.
Playing on period instruments, the highly acclaimed orchestra led by Alexander Weimann will present A Little Night Music with Mozart. They have put together a fascinating variety of pieces inspired by night composed throughout five hundred years of history.
The PBO will open the program with Mozart’s Serenade No. 13 in G major. When the young composer put the finishing touches on this piece, he added the words Eine Kleine Nacht-Musick, and that is how we have come to know it. One of Mozart’s best-loved and most-frequently-played works, Eine Kleine Nachtmusik displays his ability to charm audiences with exquisite musical beauty.
Serenades have always been considered night music. It’s right there in the name. The word comes from the Italian sera, which means evening. It is fitting then that the PBO will close the program with another serenade by Mozart. Its name Serenata Notturna makes the connection to night music even more explicit.
Between these two gems from Mozart, Weimann’s band will range across the centuries finding pieces inspired by the night as early as one by Anthony Holborne in the 1500’s right to the present with a timpani solo by Ed Reifel, a percussionist from Toronto.
