On Friday, April 24, at 7:30 p.m., the Cheng2 Duo will perform at the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium with clarinetist James Campbell.
The audience of the Valley Concert Society first got to know Bryan and Silvie Cheng as a sibling duo. Although they continue to tour regularly as a duo, they both have well-established individual musical careers and have widely separated home bases. Bryan now makes his home in Berlin while Silvie lives in New York, both a long way from their childhood home in Ottawa where she discovered her love of music at age four on a tiny blue toy keyboard.
Silvie graduated with Bachelors’ and Master’s degrees from the Manhattan School of Music where she is now a teaching artist. She made her Carnegie Hall debut in 2011. Since then, she has performed both as a recitalist and as a collaborative pianist with such luminaries as violinist Jonathan Crow and pianist Angela Hewitt.
She loves working with living composers and has performed in nearly sixty world premieres. Another cause dear to her heart is the Living Arts Collaborative through which she has contributed to many fund-raising concerts.
Silvie has explored Latin American music, releasing two recordings of music from Brazil and Chile with Chilean-American violist Georgina Rossi.
Cheng2 Duo released a recording of Spanish music in 2017. Next Friday, we will hear their interpretation of Seguida Español (or Spanish Suite) by the Cuban composer Joaquin Nin. Each of the four movements of that work represents a different region of Spain.
Tickets for this concert are available online at www.valleyconcertsociety.com at $32 for adults and $20 for students. Call 604-289-3377 for more information.
