The Valley Concert Society is delighted to welcome the Gryphon Trio, one of Canada’s most-celebrated ensembles, to the stage of the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium on Friday, November 14, at 7:30 p.m.
The entire second half of their program will be taken up with the Piano Trio No. 3 by Antonin Dvořák. It stands in contrast with the opening work on the program, Beethoven’s Piano Trio, Op. 1, No. 3. That was written at the beginning of the young composer’s career. Dvořák’s trio is widely recognized as the work of a mature composer at the peak of his powers.
Dvořák was already well-known and beloved as a composer inspired by the traditional music of his Czech homeland. His music was delightful and reflected his sunny disposition.
His third piano trio shows a marked difference. It is intense and serious, taking on the character of the mainstream European taste in composition. Even here his Czech roots can be detected in the second and fourth movements which display the tricky rhythms of a furiant, a traditional Bohemian dance.
Violinist Annalee Patipatanakooon is one of the three outstanding musicians who will perform this profound work. Annalee is a founding member of the trio. She graduated from the respected music programs at Indiana University and the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. She won first prize at both the Canadian Music Competition and the Eckhardt-Gramatté National Music Competition.
Patipatanakoon is now an esteemed violin teacher. Besides her regular position at the University of Toronto, she has conducted masterclasses across North America and in Europe. She is an Artistic Advisor to the Ottawa Chamber Music Society.
Tickets for this concert are available online at www.valleyconcertsociety.com at $32 for adults and $20 for students. For more information, call 604-289-3377.
