Butter Quartet

The Valley Concert Society is excited to present the Butter Quartet at the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium on Friday, November 8, at 7:30 p.m.

While the quartet is based in the Netherlands, the only Dutch member is their violist Isabel Franenberg. Besides studying her instrument, she has earned two degrees in musicology along with a minor in Art History.

Isabel’s resumé includes a broad range of musical experiences. She has worked as a producer, manager, librarian, and fundraiser for at least three different Dutch orchestras. She has also performed as a violist with these and other orchestras.

The ensemble, which also includes two Americans and Vancouver native Evan Buttar, came together while studying at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. They discovered a common passion in their love of historically-informed performance, an approach that seeks to be faithful to the way music was performed in the time when it was composed.

The Butter Quartet brings this sensibility to their program Well Met By Moonlight. They have chosen to play the third movement of one of Franz Schubert’s string quartets. Schubert composed this scherzo in the same year that Mendelssohn composed his music for A Midsummer Night’s Dream which opens the concert. The two pieces share the same magical, shimmering quality that evokes Shakespeare’s world of fairies.

Tickets to hear this exciting new quartet are available online at www.valleyconcertsociety.com at $32 for adults/seniors and $20 for students. Call 604-289-3377 for more information.
