The Valley Concert Society is delighted to present the Butter Quartet in concert at the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium on Friday, November 8, at 7:30 p.m.
The group is based in the Netherlands where they met as students at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague.
They have prepared a delightful program of music entitled Well Met By Moonlight which includes pieces by Mendelssohn, Schubert, and Haydn, all composers with an imagination that brings stories magically to life.
Both halves of the program will open with music from Felix Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Felix and his sister Fanny loved literature, and the plays of Shakespeare proved inspirational.
Felix first wrote the Overture, which opens the program, as a piano duet for the siblings and then arranged it for orchestra, the form in which it has become a beloved and very popular concert piece. The shimmering strings evoke the nighttime dances of the fairies. We also hear the hunting party of Prince Theseus and the braying of Bottom the Weaver who has been given a donkey’s head.
The second half opens with the Scherzo from A Midsummer Night’s Dream. It is a merry romp through the antics of the trickster Puck.
Violinist Chloe Prendergast has arranged these pieces for string quartet. Chloe grew up in Denver, Colorado, and earned her degree at Willamette University in Oregon. She went on to get her Masters in The Hague.
Chloe is a core member of Holland Baroque and has performed with many other distinguished baroque ensembles. She is co-creator of the podcast Outside the MusicBox and of the concert series associated with it.
Tickets for this delightful program are available online at www.valleyconcertsociety.com at $32 for adults/seniors and $20 for students. It is still worth upgrading these tickets to a season subscription which offers a savings and brings you another four outstanding concerts.
