Benjamin Butterfield, tenor

Sarah Hagen, piano

Acclaimed Canadian tenor Benjamin Butterfield will present a program of two contrasting song cycles. The first half will feature Robert Schumann’s Liederkreis, Op. 24. This is a cycle of nine songs based on the poetry of Heinrich Heine. The second half will focus on the music of Randy Newman. Best known for composing film scores, Newman has also written countless songs. Butterfield will sing some of his favourite from that large trove.

Benjamin Butterfield is recognized for his performance of opera, oratorio, and recital in North America and around the world. Notable examples of his repertoire are the Bach Passions and Handel’s Messiah. He has forty recordings to his credit. He is currently Head of Voice at the School of Music for the University of Victoria.
