The Valley Concert Society in partnership with the Abbotsford, Mission, and Chilliwack branches of the BC Registered Music Teachers Association is pleased to present a workshop with clinician Jarred Dunn. While the primary focus of the workshop is piano teachers, any music students and interested members of the public are invited and encouraged to attend. The cost to attend is $20.

 

Healthy Practice, Performance Preparation, and Perspective for Teachers
This interactive workshop focuses on practicing and teaching as they pertain to preparing students for examinations and competitions. We will discuss how to position and move the hands and arms for optimal comfort and agility in beginner students. Teachers are encouraged to bring any technical/fingering, practicing, or repertoire issues they regularly face with students.
 
Pianist Jarred Dunn (Yamaha Artist) won First Prize and Concerto Award at the 7th Lithuanian International Chopin Competition and is a prize winner of the Jan Hoffman, D. Vitti, Verona Zinetti, and Rome International Competitions. Mr. Dunn has performed in Australia, Europe, and North America as a recitalist, chamber musician, and concerto soloist. He is described by critics as “a piano sound-colour magician” (Muzikos Barai), “a performer with exquisite pedalling” (Ludwig van Toronto), and “technically perfect” (Belarus First Radio). Mr. Dunn is heard on CBC/Radio-Canada, Classical 96.3FM, WWFM, WQXR, 98.7 WVMO, Belarusian First, and Madison Radio-TV. CBC/Radio Canada featured him on This is My Music and Top Thirty Under Thirty: Hot Canadian Classical Musicians. His discography includes Chopin and Debussy, Brahms in Solitude, Chopin’s Diary: The Mazurkas. Recently, he recorded the complete Górecki piano solo and duo works alongside pianist Anna Górecka, the composer's daughter. He teaches master classes and lectures at The Juilliard School, Mannes College, The Royal College of Music (London), Southern Methodist University, Oberlin College-Conservatory, Katowice Academy, Bydgoszcz Academy, and is on the artist-faculties of International Piano-Chamber Music Week (Switzerland), Talent Music Master Courses (Brescia), Chetham's School for Pianists (UK), among others. He is an RCM Examiner and regularly serves as a juror for national and international competitions. He studied with Andrei Gavrilov, Maria João-Pires, Katarzyna Popowa-Zydroń, Anna Górecka, Jacob Lateiner, Yoheved Kaplinsky, and Dorothy Taubman.

Masterclass

Among the purposes listed in the constitution of the Valley Concert Society is the phrase “…to further the musical education of the younger members of the community.” One of the ways the society seeks to achieve this purpose is by giving talented music students in the community the opportunity to work directly with some of the nationally and internationally recognized professional artists that come to perform in our season series. Since 2016, the Valley Concert Society has been working with local music teachers to present masterclasses with guest artists as clinicians.

The Valley Concert Society is pleased to announce its fifth masterclass for piano students to take place on the afternoon of Saturday, February 22nd, 2025. The clinician is pianist Jarred Dunn.

Jarred Dunn will perform as part of the Valley Concert Society series the evening before the masterclass on Friday, February 21st, 2025.

The deadline to apply is January 18, 2025. We invite piano teachers to recommend students who are studying at a minimum of Level 8 and who would benefit from a session with a world-class musician. Please apply online.

Note that the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers will be videorecording this session. It will be posted on the CFMTA website in a password-protected link accessible only to registered music teachers. The clinician has agreed to the recording. Students who participate will require signed permission from a parent or guardian on the application form acknowledging the recording.

The public is welcome to attend. There is no cost to a student who is playing for the masterclass or for any accompanist who may be taking part. The cost for all others to attend is listed below.
