The Young Beethoven features a programme of early works written by Ludwig van Beethoven before he was thirty years of age. In his home city of Bonn, he played viola in the Court orchestra. When he moved to Vienna in 1794 he was best known as a virtuoso piano soloist, but he also began publishing
early compositions which reflected the strong influence of Haydn and Mozart.

Today’s programme starts with a duo, – a work written before Beethoven began assigning opus numbers- and proceeds to portions of a trio, a quartet, a quintet and a sextet, leading up to the famous Septet
which is Opus 20, and which lies on the threshold of Beethoven’s first symphony [Opus 21] Throughout his lifetime Beethoven was striving towards a liberated 19 th century romanticism, but in the
works to be heard today listeners will still recognize the young Beethoven without the scowl.
