2020/2021 Season

October is upon us and another season of concerts should be beginning for The Valley Concert Society. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a serious disruption of live cultural events of all sorts around the world.

The Valley Concert Society has cancelled all the programs planned for the fall 2020 portion of the season, one which had included ambitious new plans.

Thursday, October 22 — Gesualdo Six (CANCELLED)

Gesualdo Six is a male vocal ensemble under the direction of Owain Park. The group was formed in 2014 at Trinity College, Cambridge, United Kingdom and presents music in the tradition of English church music.

Friday, November 13 — Young Beethoven (CANCELLED)

George Zukerman put together a group of the finest professional musicians from Greater Vancouver to celebrate the 250th Anniversary of Beethoven’s birth in 1770. This program focused on outstanding chamber music from the early years of his life.

Wednesday, December 16 — Bach Christmas Oratorio (CANCELLED)

The Pacific Baroque Orchestra will join Gli Angeli Genève, an outstanding vocal ensemble from Switzerland, to perform Cantatas 2, 4, and 5 from the Christmas Oratorio along with another Bach orchestral work.

No final decision has yet been made regarding the concerts planned for the winter and spring months of 2021. Whether or not these concerts can go ahead will depend on the direction we receive from our provincial health authorities.

Friday, February 12 — Duo Concertante

The husband-and-wife team of Nancy Dahn, violinist, and Timothy Steeves, pianist, teaches at Memorial University in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Nancy Dahn will be the clinician at a string masterclass the next day.

Friday, March 12 — Canadian Guitar Quartet

After the enthusiastic welcome this group received here in 2017, we are delighted to welcome this talented and engaging group from Canada’s leading classical guitar program at the University of Ottawa.

Thursday, April 22 — Viano String Quartet

This remarkable young ensemble won first prize at the prestigious Banff International String Quartet Competition in 2019. The Valley Concert Society was invited to host one of the concerts in the competition’s winner’s tour.

Tuesday, May 4 — Ehnes, Tsang, and Neiman

Superstar violinist James Ehnes joins cellist Bion Tsang and pianist Adam Neiman to perform a program featuring the marvelous Tchaikovsky Piano Trio. We are thrilled to welcome Ehnes back to Abbotsford after his triumphant recital in 2009.

It is our hope that a portion of this amazing season can take place as planned. For now, we hope that you are enjoying the many online listening opportunities that are available. We will shortly announce an online concert that will be made available to you on The Valley Concert Society’s website.

Stay well and live well.
